Prep Roundup: Manogue girls’ make early lead stand against Carson High

Bishop Manogue went on a 30-8 run in the first half en route to a 73-48 win over the Carson High girls basketball team Tuesday at Morse Burley Gym.

The Senators fell to 3-10, two games behind Damonte Ranch, 5-8, with just three games left in the regular season. The only way for Carson to make the playoffs is to beat Damonte, Wooster and Douglas, and get some help from other Sierra League teams.

Carson scored the first basket of the game, but that was the only time the Senators were ahead.

“They are a good team,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “They play aggressive defense and they all can shoot.

“We didn’t rebound at all and we were careless with the ball. Dajarrah (Navarro) played her best game of the season.”

Lily Bouza led Carson with 13 points, Navarro added 10 and freshman Abby Golik added nine.

Carson cut the lead to 10-8, but the Miners went on a 19-4 run to end the quarter with a 29-12 advantage. Ten of those points came after CHS turnovers.

The barrage continued in the second quarter, as Manogue scored nine of the quarter’s first 13 points to open up a 43-16 lead with 3:41 left in the half.

Manogue coach Craig Holt played his 16-person roster liberally throughout the game.

Douglas edges Mustangs

RENO — Hannah Carr’s layup off a pass from Taylynn Kizer beat the buzzer and lifted Douglas to a 51-49 Sierra League victory at Damonte Ranch.

Douglas (7-6 league, 11-13 overall) rallied from a 19-6 first quarter deficit to maintain its share of second-place with Galena in the standings.

Damonte Ranch (5-8, 8-11) led 30-20 at halftime and 44-39 at the end of three quarters. The Mustangs still lead Carson by two games in the race for the final playoff spot.

Vikings edge Dayton

DAYTON — Poor first-half free-throw shooting and foul trouble played a big factor in Dayton’s 37-27 loss to South Tahoe.

Dayton trailed 22-19 at the half despite going 2-for-12 at the line.

Tamia Powell returned from injury and scored 13 points. Aleea Howe added 11 points and four rebounds. Abby Sikora chipped in six points and Cassie Dickenson had four points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.

Mustangs’ rally stops Tigers

RENO — Damonte Ranch staged a fourth quarter rally to knock off Douglas, 57-50, in a key Sierra League contest.

Damonte Ranch (8-5 league, 13-8 overall) outscored Douglas 20-10 in the fourth quarter to win a game in which the lead changed hands seven times and no more than seven points ever separated the two teams.

Douglas (5-8 league, 7-15 overall) now trails the Mustangs by three games with three left to play in the race for third-place, but leads Carson by two games.

The Tigers led 30-27 at halftime and 40-37 after three quarters.

South Tahoe stops Dayton

DAYTON — Despite 27 points and 13 rebounds from Trevor Burrows, Dayton dropped a 42-38 decision to South Tahoe.

Dayton had chances to tie and go ahead in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get over the hump. The game was tied at 22 at the half.

Dayton went 7-for-17 at the line and went 1-for-9 from the 3-point line.

Carson bowlers rally

to beat S. Springs

Trailing after two games, Carson High’s bowling team rallied to beat Spanish Springs, 25-20, in recent action.

Gabe Gabica rolled a 279 high game and 658 series, both personal highs, to lead the Senators. Ray Ceragioli (234-648), Chesney Minor (257-634), Brandon Engles (265-633) and Taylor Johnson (237-622) all eclipsed the 600 mark.

Robbie Munoz (586), Michael Rhoades (573), Connor Bell (568), Gavin Cerniglia (530), Rylan Fancher (522) and Kayleigh Dunbar (509) all bowled well.
