LAS VEGAS — The chief of staff to state Attorney General Adam Laxalt has been nominated by President Donald Trump to become the top federal prosecutor in Nevada.

Republican U.S. Sen. Dean Heller announced Friday the Senate will be asked to approve Nicholas Trutanich to replace interim U.S. Attorney Dayle Elieson.

Elieson is a former Texas prosecutor who was appointed as an interim in Nevada in January by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. She replaced acting U.S. Attorney Steven Myhre.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto issued a statement endorsing Trutanich’s nomination.

Masto says she worked with Trutanich when both were at the Nevada’s attorney general’s office.

Trutanich was a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles and served a deputy justice attache handling national security cases in Iraq. He lives in Reno.
