Ben Nelson turned in a strong performance on the mound as the Carson High baseball team opened its season with a 7-4 win against Fallon on Thursday in the Mike Bearman Tournament.
Nelson allowed one run on three hits and struck out four over four innings to pick up the win.
“We need to throw more strikes,” Carson coach Bryan Manoukian said. “We had to throw too many pitches to get outs, especially with Ben. His pitch count was up in the second inning. He was throwing five, six and seven pitches per out.”
Carson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as the rally was highlighted by an RBI double by Kahle Good, who went 1-for-1 with three walks. Jared Barnard led Carson’s offense with two hits, a double and three RBI. Teigen Key also had two hits and Colby Zemp doubled and Abel Carter and Landonn Truesdale each added a hit for the Senators.
“Offensively, I thought we had a good approach. We only struck out twice.”
Carson was also solid defensively as it didn’t commit an error.
Manoukian said Barnard will start Friday against Central Catholic. He was not sure about a starter for the Spanish Springs game,
