Prep Roundup: Sierra Lutheran boys claim 1A track title

YERINGTON — Led by Jared Marchegger, Sierra Lutheran captured the NIAA 1A boys track and field championship Saturday at Yerington High School.

Sierra Lutheran finished with 188 total points. Smith Valley was a distant second with 95.

The Sierra Lutheran girls were second at 152, 26.5 points behind Wells.

Marchegger won three individual events — the 800 in 2:06.67, the 1600 in 4:44.62 and the 3200 in 10:20.90.

Teagan Hansen had a big day, finishing second to Marchegger in the 1600 (4:45.22) and 3200 (10:37.33). Hansen and Marchegger also ran a leg on the Falcons’ victorious 3200 relay team (9:19.42).

Sierra Lutheran also got wins from Bret Walker (discus) who threw a career-best 148-3. Walker also took second in the shot with a PR of 49-feet. Teammate Peyton Hedwall won the shot with a PR of 51-4. Josh Baughman won the pole vault at 7-6. Shawn Emm was third in the 400.

The Falcons’ 1600 relay team was first at 3:45.64, thanks to the efforts of Caleb Contreras, John Miles, Emm and Johannes Lamprecht. The 800 relay team of Grant Goins, Miles, Emm and Lamprecht won with a 1:38.72.

Goins and Lamprecht will move on to state in the high jump with marks of 5-10 and 5-8, respectively. Teagan Berger advanced in the triple jump with a 36-2 1/4.

On the girls side, Rachel Hall won both hurdle events with times of 17.53 and 50.11; the latter was a PR. Hall also moved on the 100 at 13.99. Abby Ferenz won the high jump at 4-10, Sophia Choate won the pole vault at 5-6, Taylor Davison won the 1600 in 5:57, a PR, and she was second in the 800 at 2:38.01. Emily McNeely won the 3200 in 13:17.76 and was second in the 1600 at 6:02.51. Aleyna Gilson moved on with second-place finishes in the 100 (13.83), 200 (28.51) and 400 (64.90). Mikayla Talkington was second in the shot with a heave of 30-feet.

Sierra Lutheran won the 400 relay in 54.42, 1600 relay in 4:39.10, and the 3200 relay (12:03.4).

3A Track: Masons lead Dayton

YERINGTON — Ashley Mason won the long jump (16-5 1/2) and triple jump (35-6) at the 3A regionals at Yerington High School.

Rebecca Mason moves on to state after posting a PR of 61.12 in the 400. The Masons are also part of the state-qualifying 800 and 1600 relay teams. The 800 team of the Masons, Macie Callan and Sydney Strickler won in 1:46.8. The 1600 team of the same group was second at 4:09.93.

Austin Lunz won the shot put with a PR of 42-7. Jeff Walker won the pole vault at 12-feet and David Delfin was second in the discus with a PR of 144-10.

SWIMMING

Kolb wins for Senators

Brett Kolb was the only individual winner for Carson at the Northern 4A swim meet at the Carson Aquatic Center over the weekend.

Kolb won the 100 free in 48.37. He also swam a leg on the 400 free relay team that advanced to state with a second-place finish. He swam legs on the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay teams that took thirds. The top three finishers advanced to state next week in Las Vegas.

Reece Canfield, Matteas Klatt and Juan Gutierrez were on the 400 free-relay squad. Carlos Torres, Canfield and Klatt were on the 200 medley relay team. Klatt also will move on to state in the 500 free after finishing third in 5:11.01. Canfield, Torres and Gutierrez were on the 200 free relay team.

Nicole Van Geel was third in the 50 free with a 25.36. She also swam the anchor leg on the state-qualifying 400 free relay team. Hannah Presley, Morgan Nelson and Leandra Blake were also on the team.

SOFTBALL

Douglas headed to state

RENO — Haley Doughty and Chloie Pratt hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning to break a 3-all tie and Amanda Hoffman pitched out of bases loaded jams in the sixth and seventh innings as Douglas held on for a 6-5 victory over Bishop Manogue on Saturday morning at the Northern 4A Region Softball Tournament.

Tournament host-Manogue scored once in the bottom of the seventh inning before its rally was cut off when Douglas center fielder Mackenzie Brixey threw out the potential tying run at home to end the game.

By winning, No. 3 seed Douglas (24-10-1 overall) advanced to the region finals to face top-seeded Spanish Springs; however, play in the double elimination tournament was stopped by rain Saturday afternoon. The Tigers and Cougars are scheduled to resume play Monday at 2 p.m. at Manogue. A final game, if necessary, would start at 4.

Both teams will advance to the 4A state tournament, which gets underway on Thursday, also at Manogue.

The Tigers were able to get past second-seeded Manogue even on a day when they gave up five errors and stranded 13 base runners, 10 in scoring position.

Pratt slammed a three-run homer in the first inning to stake the Tigers to a 3-0 lead.

The Miners answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and tied the score with another run in the third.

After Doughty and Pratt homered in the fifth, Kettja Bennett added an RBI double later in the inning to extend the lead to 6-3.

The Tigers left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth and then Hoffman escaped from a bases loaded jam in the bottom half of the inning when she retired cleanup hitter Bailey McLaughlin on a fly ball to right field.

BASEBALL

Falcons eliminated

WELLS — Sierra Lutheran was eliminated, 14-6, by Virginia City on Saturday at the Northern 1A playoffs at Wells High School.

“While we did not reach our goal of making state this year, we are proud of the way our guys competed,” assistant coach Brandon Neal said. “There was never a game we felt was out of reach, and we always kept fighting no matter what. It was not a team effort, but a family effort.”

The Falcons lose three players to graduation — Seth Houghton, Michael Davis and Austin Stone.

VC went up 8-3 in the fourth. Sierra Lutheran closed to 8-6 in the fifth, but the Muckers pulled away with six unanswered runs.

Rocky DiMartino went 4-for-4 and Alex Bernhard went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
