Wave boys win regional title, girls place 5th

Riding the strength of its sprinters, the Greenwave captured the boys regional track championship as it qualified in two relay and five individual events on Saturday in Yerington.

The Greenwave won the boys division over Truckee, 122-114, while taking fifth in the girls division with 71 points. Spring Creek won over Truckee, 131.5-129.5. Only the top three finishers qualified for this weekend’s state meet in Carson. The meet begins Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 8 a.m.

Drake Copley won both the 100- and 200-meter races, junior Reid Clyburn won the 300 hurdles, junior Trevor East won the triple jump and the school record-breaking team of Clyburn, Copley, senior Broder Thurston and junior Colton Peterson won both the 4x100 and 4x200 races. Peterson finished second in the 200 and senior Justin Cathey finished third in the high jump to round out the state qualifiers.

Copley won both the 100 and 200 events, evening taking first in the preliminary for both. He finished the 100 race in 11.27 and the 200 in 22.74 seconds, a personal best, followed by Peterson in second in 23.14.

Clyburn won the 300 hurdles with a season-best 41.30 and also took third in the 110 hurdles in 16.60. East finished second in the 110 hurdles in 16.39.

Both the 4x100 and 4x200 team dominated again, winning both events.

Copley, Peterson, Thurston and Clyburn finished the 4x100 in 43.28 and the 4x200 in 1:31.14.

East won the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 41 feet, 4.75 inches and Justin Cathey finished third in the high jump with a personal-best 5-10. Thurston missed by one placing in both the long and triple jumps, finishing with jumps of 18-2.5 and 38-7.75.

Jacob Weber missed qualifying in the 400 by 0.21 seconds with a fifth-place finish of 54.41. Cathey’s personal best in the 800 had him finishing 11th in 2:12.16 and Daniel Tapia scored a 10th-place finish in the 1600 in 5:02.68 and in the 3200 in 10:52.75, a personal best.

The 4x400 team of Zeke Washington, Angelo Vann, Weber and East missed qualifying by one spot, coming up 5 seconds short in taking fourth in 3:41.84. The 4x800 team of J.R. Demillo, Bryan Ugalde, Tyler Marsh and Cathey finished fifth in 8:53.23.

Weber led the team in the shot put with a throw of 33-8 to finish 23rd, followed by Austin Lunderstadt’s 32-9.50 to place 24th. Micah Whitaker took 10th in the discus at 113-10. Brown finished eighth to lead the pole vaulters with a 9-foot mark followed by Morgan Lawry and Richard Saunooke, who both had a personal best of 8 feet.

Collins, Shults lead Lady Wave

Sophomore Kyndal Collins and senior Brynlee Shults were the only individual qualifiers for state while the 4x100 team punched its ticket with a victory.

Collins won both the 100 and 200 events, including the preliminaries, in 12.96 and 26.72, a personal best and helped the 4x100 team win its race.

Aisha Sharron, Sierra Hickox, Brynlee Shults and Collins won the 4x100 event in 51.66 while the 4x200 team of Allie Lister, Shelby Hickox, Shults and Collins took fifth in 1:51.90. Shults took second in the triple jump with a personal-best 34-6.5 after finishing eighth in the long jump at 14-7.5.

Mayla Dahl scored a fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles to advance to the final heat but finished eighth at 18.20. Makayle Mathisen finished sixth in the 800 in 2:32.48, a personal best, and seventh in the 1600 in 5:38.85. Fiona White finished 20th in the 400 in 1:11.79 followed by Vera Vaz in 21st in 1:16.84. Shelby Hickox was 12th in the 300 hurdles in 52.52.

The 4x800 relay team of Savannah Robinson, Jordyn Dahl, Vaz and Mathisen finished sixth in 11:03.54, and the 4x400 relay team of the Hickox sisters, Lister and Mathisen finished seventh in 4:37.92.

Tiffany Sorensen came close to qualifying in the shot put and discus, finishing sixth in both with throws of 28-4 and 85-11. Sharron finished seventh in the high jump at 4-10, a personal best, and Mayla Dahl was ninth with a personal-best 4-8. Lister barely missed qualifying in the pole vault by 4 inches with a mark of 8-6, followed by Glenda Lee in eighth at 8 feet. Sierra Hickox finished ninth in the long jump at 14-4.5 and Sharron was sixth in the triple at 31-11.5 followed by Lister in ninth at 30-6.75.
