Golf, tennis teams finish season; soccer wraps up this week

The Lady Wave golf team fell just short from qualifying a golfer to last week’s state tournament in Truckee.

Fallon, which ended the season at Fernley and Lowry two weeks ago, had its best finish of the season, coming in fourth ahead of Fernley and South Tahoe in the final tournament.

“The team as a whole did their best of the season,” Fallon coach Sandy Vanderbeek said. “They consistently improved with each tournament and finished in a strong fourth place in the league at Winnemucca. I am sad to see the seniors go. They have worked hard. I look forward to seeing what the rest of the team can do next year.”

Senior Allie Lister shot a 106 to lead the team but ended a stroke short of the sixth and final spot in qualifying for the state tournament. Only the top six golfers from non-qualifying teams advanced and Lister finished in seventh but was the first alternate for postseason.

“She played a good round but just couldn’t close the gap enough,” Vanderbeek said.

Tiffany Sorensen finished second on the team with a 110, followed by Glenda Lee at 115. Kim Park shot a 125 and Molly Woolsley had a 129 to round out the four scoring golfers. Char Fredrick scored a 133 for Fallon.

Fallon duo falls short in state tennis tournament

The tennis duo of Brooklynn Whitaker and Allison Frost lost their opening match in Friday’s state tournament in Truckee after winning the regional title the week before.

The Lady Wave duo fell to The Meadows’ Shayna Indyg and Claire Strimling, 6-3 and 6-2, but is expected to return next fall for another shot at the state title. Whitaker and Frost were also named to the girls doubles first team for the Northern 3A region. They were also named the girls doubles team of the year.

Fallon also picked up several honorable mentions for both the girls and boys teams.

For the boys, Alex Perazzo (singles) and Owen Palmer and Nathan Lords (doubles) were named honorable mention. The Lady Wave honorable mentions included Paige Donahue (singles) and Selene Montes and Ashlynn Shults (doubles).

Lady Wave soccer records 2 league wins

Freshman Lilly Howard completed the hat trick in a 4-1 win over Lowry on Oct. 9 and Fallon defeated Sparks, 4-1, later in the week to give Fallon a trio of league wins with the season winding down.

Freshman Sydney Gusewelle also scored a goal against the Buckaroos and senior Kenna Hamlin had three assists for Fallon, which recorded 14 shots on goal. Senior Sam Hines had six saves.

Hamlin and Gusewelle each scored a goal and assisted on another to lead Fallon over Sparks on Oct. 12. Junior Aspen Mori had one goal and Howard added one, too. Hines had six saves against the Railroaders, including posting a shutout in the second half.

Fallon, which hosted North Valleys on Tuesday for Senior Day, lost to three of the top teams in the league last week. Fallon lost to Incline, 6-0; Truckee, 8-0; and North Tahoe, 5-1. The Lady Wave finishes the regular season at Elko and Spring Creek on Thursday and Friday, respectively. The top five teams qualify for the postseason but Fallon was eliminated last week.

Wave boys soccer picks up 2nd league win

Fallon snapped a nine-game losing streak last week by defeating Incline, 3-2, for the second time this season.

The Greenwave, which was eliminated from playoff contention, finishes the season this week with a pair of games against Elko and Spring Creek. Fallon hosts Elko on Thursday and Spring Creek on Friday for Senior Day.

Senior Oscar Garcia recorded the hat trick against the Highlanders for Fallon’s second league win of the year. Junior Hamilton Sommer finished with two assists and junior Kaique DeCarvalho had one assist.
