Volunteers sought for annual National Public Lands Day cleanup event

Volunteers are sought for an annual cleanup event in Fernley as part of the celebration of National Public Lands Day, Sept. 22.

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort to protect public lands.

The cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fernley Swales, a well-preserved segment of the California National Historic Emigrant Trail and the path of the first Transcontinental Railroad.

The historic site, located just north of Fernley, has been listed as one of Nevada’s most endangered historic places.

The annual cleanup is sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management, the Fernley Rotary and the Oregon-California Trails Association.

Volunteers will receive T-shirts and a free entrance pass from the National Environment Education Foundation to be used at any participating federal agency fee area in the United States.
