Prep Roundup: Carson High golf tied for league lead

Karen and Jill Beglin finished 1-2 for the Carson High girls golf team on Tuesday in the Sierra League Tournament at Toiyabe Golf Course.

Karen shot a 70 and Jill fired a 74. It was Karen’s first low medalist finish of the season as she shot the only round under par.

Manogue edged out Carson by one stroke for first place at Toiyabe on Tuesday, 352-53. Damonte was third, Galena fourth, Douglas fifth, and Wooster had no team score.

Carson and Manogue are now tied for first in the Sierra League overall standings. Karen and Jill Beglin are 1-2 in the Sierra League’s individual standings.

Karen’s 33 on the front nine included four birdies with one bogey.

She started out the back nine with a birdie on 10 and then one on 13, but struggled a little coming in with three straight bogeys to finish with a 37 on the back nine.

“It was an extremely solid round. She had a chance to post a personal best for us, but I was extremely pleased with her ball striking,” CHS coach Wade Greenlee said.

Jill Beglin also had an impressive front nine, making the turn at 2-under. She couldn’t match that on the back, though, and finished at 2-over.

Greenlee noted that his top two players shaved off 17 strokes from their last match. “It’s rounds like these when I realize how fortunate I am to be their coach.”

Sophia Taggart posted a 103, and it would have been a personal best if not for trouble on No. 5 and No. 16. “She continues to improve and her play off the tee was exceptionally good today. Sophia just needs to get rid of those two or three bad holes that have hindered her from being one of the sub-100 players we need to complement the Beglins. She was 10-over on those two holes, but she’s getting better every week,” said Greenlee.

Counting as the fourth score for Carson was Sarah Wiggins’ 106. “Same thing for Sarah. Three holes played a little better and she’s the other sub-100 girl we need. She’s much straighter now, and her ball flight is so much better than at the beginning of the season.”

Gabby Montes posted another personal best of 107. “Sounds like a broken record, but on two holes, Gabby was 12-over. She’s starting to get those pars and bogeys that were doubles and triples last year, though. She’s 18 shots better than last year and getting better every week,” said Greenlee.

Kassidy Cooley had a tough day with a round of 123. Greenlee was impressed with her attitude, however. “Golf is a difficult game and today Kassidy struggled from the practice range out to the course. She still kept grinding the whole way. We need her to bounce back and all of the girls rallied around her. I was really proud of them for lifting her up.”

With only two matches left, the Senators are almost assured of postseason play in the Northern 4A regional. The top two teams will then move on from regionals to state play at Dayton. Currently the top three teams in the north region are Carson with a team stroke average of 356, Reno at 360, and Manogue at 363. Carson’s next match is Tuesday at Genoa Ranch.

Carson volleyball team goes 1-2 on the week

The Carson High volleyball team finished up a busy week by getting swept by Galena on Thursday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Galena won 25-14, 25-13 and 25-22. Carson started the week with a four-game loss to Reno. Carson defeated Wooster in five games on Wednesday night.

“Kudos to Galena,” coach Robert Maw said. “I told coach Nate (Byrne) that was the best I have seen them play in three years.

“They did a good job of staying together, staying focused and playing with a lot of energy. We just couldn’t match it.”

Galena used big runs in all three games to sweep. With the first game tied at 3, Galena won 9 out of the next 10 points to take a 12-4 lead. At 18-10, Galena would go on a 5-0 run for a 23-11 lead.

In game 2, with Carson leading 7-5, Galena would go on a 6-0 run and 5-0 run to take a 16-9 lead. Maw was happy with the team’s fight in the final game. The Senators were down 20-11 before closing it to 23-22.

“That will come with handling more high pressure situations,” Maw said about learning how to stop a run. “I am pleased with that third set. That was all them in coming back, it was good to see them come back and fight.”

Shae DeJoseph had six kills to lead the team. Maw said DeJoseph was taking freer swings and she continues to heal from an auto accident last year.

“She had a good night. It was nice to see her hit with confidence,” Maw said. “It was the first night she really took some big swings, so that was nice to see.”

Cami Larkin also had six kills. Camille Kordonowy had 14 digs and Abby Pradere had 17 assists.

Carson (10-4, 1-2 in league) hosts Bishop Manogue on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Carson girls tennis falls

Carson fell 11-7 at Wooster on Thursday. Becca Trejo and Sydny Lloyd swept in doubles for Carson, winning 6-1, 7-6 (7-2 and 6-2. Two key matches that helped make the difference in the match came when Alex Knowlton and Isela Rodriguez lost 6-7, (4-7) and Hailee Bauman and Lola Works lost 4-6 in doubles for the Senators.

In singles for Carson, Jennifer Artz won twice 6-0, 6-3, Shea Dunn won 6-3 and Rachel Fenzke won 6-1.

Monday night football at Empire Ranch

Empire Ranch Golf Course is hosting Monday Night football events at Mallards Restaurant.

Featured are drink specials, $3 pints, and a buffet for only $10.99. This week’s buffet will consist of a nacho bar, lasagna, garlic bread, salad, and cookies.

The Monday night game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers begins at about 5:15 p.m.
