Carson District Judge Todd Russell on Monday took under submission the legal challenge of the petition to create a redistricting commission to draw legislative and other voting district maps. After a 45-minute hearing, he ordered lawyers for both sides to draft orders for him to consider in putting together a ruling and to file those proposed orders in 10 days.

LAS VEGAS — Nevada security officials had trouble tracking resort emergency response plans, months after the Legislature tightened requirements for 91 casinos statewide to update and maintain playbooks for incidents including active shooters and natural disasters, a newspaper reported.
Carson City Justice court was the first in Nevada to conduct a jury trial in a domestic battery case under the new Supreme Court ruling saying defendants accused of that crime are entitled to a jury. The high court made that ruling in September, concluding that with the most recent legislative additions to potential penalties, domestic battery was now elevated to a “serious” offense instead of a “petty” offense that doesn’t warrant a jury trial.
LAS VEGAS — The Nevada U.S. Attorney’s office collected more than $14 million in civil and criminal penalties during federal Fiscal 2019. Nick Trutanich, U.S. Attorney for Nevada, said $8.5 million of that came from criminal actions and $5.6 million from civil actions.

Fair Maps Nevada PAC, backed by the League of Women Voters of Nevada, “is interested in amicably resolving this litigation,” attorneys for the organization told Kevin Benson, lawyer for Rev. Christmas wasn’t always a joyful time for my cousin Christina Halli. “Shortly after I got married, I experienced several lost pregnancies,” she shared. “I couldn’t stand the idea of Christmas with family and all the beautiful children I couldn’t have. My husband and I stayed home and had a private solemn Christmas, just the two of us. It was pretty sad and lonely.”

The racing community got some sad news last week. Bill Simpson, one of the prime movers in racing safety, passed away at 79. Simpson products are used throughout the racing world. I used Simpson safety harness in my racing days many years ago, but he also provided more than 200 safety products including driving suits, gloves, helmets, head restraints, drag chutes, and more to prevent driver injuries.

Carson City wins again. The Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation named Carson City one of 20 cities to receive the Levitt AMP Grant Award of $25,000 fund its free summer concert series. The series is put on by the Brewery Arts Center at The Change Companies stage.
The Board of Supervisors spent much of its meeting Thursday discussing the fate of the 3rd Street parking lot and the Carson Farmers Market. The board took up a recommendation from the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee to spend $240,000 to reconfigure the lot and remove some trees on top of $190,000 already approved to repave it. The board also considered whether to fund $50,000 in electrical upgrades and $160,000 for shade structures proposed by Carson City staff, items RACC declined to recommend for funding. The money for the entire project is coming from the Redevelopment fund.
Eleven mostly rural Nevada communities will get a total of $72,131 from the federal government to help buy police bullet proof vests, body cameras and provide training. “These resources will provide officers the training, equipment and strategies needed to enable them to do their jobs effectively and keep them safe from harm,” said Catherine Sullivan of the federal Office of Justice Programs.

It would seem then never rose to the surface.

Plans for a residential development on Andersen Ranch moved forward Tuesday after the Planning Commission voted to recommend the project’s tentative map to the Board of Supervisors. There are lots of folks that receive a form 1099-MISC that shows the total income they received in the year. Sometimes that form is not correct. Employment Security Division administrator Kimberly Gaa on Thursday formally approved the Unemployment Insurance tax rate for 2020. The Carson City school board last week approved a capital projects plan that includes the construction of classrooms for Eagle Valley Middle School to ease overcrowding at Carson Middle School. The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Carson City Community Center. But then the family moved to Nevada where things were handled differently.
The Carson City Fire Department is conducting wildland fuels reduction prescribed burn operations in Vicee Canyon in the Timberline area on Tuesday. Burning operations will occur on a 24-hour basis and will be manned with trained firefighters for the duration.

Carson City is celebrating the Giving Tuesday on Dec. 3. The worldwide event started in 2012 sets aside the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to donate online to good causes. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada says donations help it keep the lights on and provide programs and activities.
Although charitable non-profits put out a call for donations all year long to fund their various causes, the biggest donations come during November and December when those who are fortunate are likely to give to the less fortunate during “the season of giving.”

This year, 369 children from nine area elementary schools sing the songs of the season.
