Winnemucca doctor admits opioid violations

The vice chief of staff at Humboldt County General Hospital in Winnemucca has pleaded guilty to writing prescriptions for opioids without a medical purpose.

Nevada U.S. Attorney Nicholas Trutanich said Shouping Li, 57, pleaded guilty to distribution of a controlled substance on Tuesday. He also admitted several of his patients passed away while he was treating them.

He faces a June 10 sentencing hearing and could receive up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
