The Board of Regents meets Friday to approve a resolution temporarily deferring fees and tuition for students impacted by the federal shutdown.
The special meeting was called just one day after Gov. Steve Sisolak urged the system to consider helping students facing financial hardship from the partial federal shutdown. The shutdown comes just as fees and tuition are due for the spring semester and Sisolak expressed concern federal workers not getting a paycheck could be forced to drop out of classes this spring.
The board will meet at the system administration building in Las Vegas at 1 p.m. Friday, teleconferenced to the Reno and Elko campuses to consider the resolution directing campus presidents to temporarily defer payment of fees and tuition and permanently waive any late penalties for those students currently enrolled for the spring semester but suffering financial hardship because of the shutdown.
Those students will be expected to pay their fees and other costs once the shutdown ends and they receive the back pay Congress has promised.
