At approximately noon on Tuesday, a hiker in the hills north of Carson City in the area of Goni Hills discovered the remains of a human approximately 400 yards from the nearest dirt trail road, according to a release from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
The location of the discovery was approximately 1,400 yards south of the Storey County/Carson City line, and over 4,500 yards from the Lyon County line.
Detectives responded to the area and retrieved a human skull, jaw, and what appeared to be a single vertebra within a circle area of approximately 40 feet. The bones were fully decomposed of flesh, suggesting the remains had been in the exposed environment for an extended period. Search and rescue crews were prepared for a more extensive search of the area on Wednesday.
All of the remains will be transported to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office for examination and an attempt to identify the person. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at 887-2500.
