Double Decker food truck calls Carson City home

Carson City residents may have seen a large double-decker bus in town recently. It’s a new British- and American-themed food truck opened by owner Billy Lavelle. The Bus Boy Mobile Cuisine bus serves customers with a street-side menu, and includes a sit-down restaurant upstairs on the revamped 1988 Leyland Olympian double decker bus.

Brad Keselowski took his second Monster Energy NASCAR Cup win of the season last Sunday at Martinsville, tying him with Kyle Busch for 2019 victories. Six races into the season, Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin have each won once to put them in the playoffs. The Fords were strong at Martinsville, taking six of the top 10 spots. The lone Chevy in the top 10 was the No. 9 of Chase Elliott, who finished second. Three Toyotas rounded out the front end of the field.

Carson City schools seek to lessen deficit

The Carson City School District is looking for ways to reduce a $5.7 million deficit for its projected fiscal year 2019 ending fund balance by $3 million, but everything hinges on outcomes from the Nevada Legislature in the remaining weeks of the session.

Nevada bill requires cause to hold undocumented immigrant

A stream of opponents argued before lawmakers Friday against a Democrat-backed bill that stipulates police must have probable cause before holding an undocumented immigrant for federal authorities. Opponents said the legislation would jeopardize public safety and voiced fears of violent crime from undocumented immigrants. One argued the bill forces law enforcement to ignore ongoing criminal activity.

Bump stocks to be reviewed Monday

The Senate and Assembly Judiciary committees meet in joint session Monday morning to hear the bill that would ban “bump stocks” and any other devices designed to make semi-automatic weapons fire like machine guns. Those were the devices used by the shooter in the October 1 massacre on the Las Vegas Strip.

Public Employees Benefits Program may see lower premiums

The Public Employees Benefits Program voted Thursday to reduce premium rates in the governor’s recommended budget for the system that provides state worker health benefits.

Capitol Police pay bill to get Assembly vote

The Assembly Government Affairs Committee voted Friday to recommend passage of the bill to increase pay and benefits for Capitol Police officers. Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui, D-Las Vegas, introduced AB143 saying its not fair Capitol Police are paid less and treated differently than NHP, P&P and other public safety officers in state service. She said they also receive fewer benefits than officers in other public safety divisions and have less chance for advancement.

Nevada Assembly OKs marriage equality amendment

The proposed constitutional amendment removing language that defines only marriages between a man and a woman as valid was passed by the Assembly on Friday.

Nevada Legislature bill would allow digital school days

Teachers on the Assembly Education Committee were the skeptics of a bill to allow school districts to use so-called digital days when weather and other emergencies force closure of schools.

Bill would hike Nevada’s minimum wage

A new bill in Nevada aims to raise the state’s minimum wage. Legislation introduced Monday would increase the minimum wage to $12 an hour for workers that are not offered health insurance. The minimum wage under the bill would rise to $11 an hour for workers that are offered health insurance.

Roger Diez: Fernley 95A Speedway set to begin season Saturday

Local racing begins Saturday, weather permitting. Fernley 95A Speedway kicks off the 2019 season with stock cars, Gen X, Modifieds, and Sport Mods. Spectator gates open at 3 p.m., racing starts at 6. The track has an ambitious schedule this year that includes a class for 360 sprint cars and a visit from the World of Outlaws in September.

Female lobbyists praise crack down on sexual misconduct at Nevada Legislature

Three veteran women lobbyists say thanks to the efforts of Speaker Jason Frierson and former Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford two years ago, there’s finally a system and attitude to report sexual misconduct in the Legislature. That system was developed in the wake of sexual harassment charges against then-Sen. Mark Manendo at the end of the 2017 Legislature.

Nevada Legislature offers confidential process for sexual misconduct victims

The investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by former Assemblyman Mike Sprinkle raised questions among, in particular, women working in various capacities in the Legislature. Rule 20 of the Joint Standing Rules prohibits sexual harassment including unwelcome advances, inappropriate verbal abuse, unwanted physical conduct of a sexual nature as well as retaliation against someone for refusing advances.

Brothel ban bill filed in Nevada, sex workers vow to fight

A bill introduced in the Nevada Senate on Thursday seeks to ban the nation’s only legal brothels by outlawing prostitution. Republican state Sen. Joe Hardy said brothels have no place in Nevada and attract women with few economic options who get stuck in an abusive industry. Democratic Sen. Pat Spearman also signed on as a sponsor of the legislation, saying the legal bordellos can disguise sex trafficking.
