The Lyon County Board of Commissioners will be reviewing and potentially voting on a proposed “2nd Amendment Sanctuary County” resolution at their March 21 meeting.
The issue has been raised across rural counties in Nevada following the recent passage of SB143, which Gov. Steve Sisolak signed into law. At the Feb. 21 meeting, Commissioner Ken Gray requested a future agenda item to discuss bringing a possible resolution forward.
Based on recent developments there were discussions held between Commission Chairman Bob Hastings and County Manager Jeff Page. Hastings has requested that the agenda item for March 21 include a prepared resolution for discussion and possible vote.
Page explained he’s working on crafting a resolution that addresses the concerns of the County Commission but doesn’t infringe upon the duties of the sheriff or other elected officials. The County Commission doesn’t have the authority, under Nevada law, to dictate how an elected official does his/her job.
Page says he recognizes the complexity and passion over the issue. He has received input from citizens about wording of the resolution. He explained some of the suggestions for wording he has received is illegal or unconstitutional.
He said he anticipates having a resolution prepared within the next several days.
The March 21 meeting will be held at 9 a.m. at the Lyon County Administrative Complex, 27 S. Main Street, Yerington.
