Local roundup: Grand slam weekend for Carson High teams

It was a grand slam of a weekend for Carson High’s teams. Kahle Good’s grand slam home run helped propel the Senator baseball team to a 9-8 win in eight innings over McQueen on Saturday at Ron McNutt Field.

Also on Saturday, the CHS softball team swept a doubleheader at Reed and Carson’s boys and girls track teams had another impressive day at a league meet at Douglas.

Good’s grand slam in the sixth inning helped Carson overcome a 6-3 deficit and take a 7-6 led. Good’s homer came after McQueen had scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead.

McQueen responded by scoring two runs in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. But Carson tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh when Justin Nussbaumer was hit by a pitch to force in Garritt Benavidez with the tying run. Good scored on an error to win it for CHS in the bottom of the eighth.

Max Fontaine struck out three over 2 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the Senators. Good went 3-for-3 for CHS.

SOFTBALL

CHS 6-19, REED 5-9

In the nightcap, Shannen VonDuering had four RBI to help lead Carson’s 18-hit attack as CHS rolled to a 19-9 win. VonDuering drove in runs on a home run during Carson’s three-run fifth and a single in the Senators’ 5-run sixth. Carson added four runs in the seventh to take a 19-9 lead.

Bella Kordonowy, VonDuering, and Caydee Farnworth all had singles during Carson’s five-run sixth.

Farnworth was the winning pitcher for Carson, striking out six over 4 2/3 innings.

Carson had four home runs in the game. Along with Von Duering’s homer, Kailee Luschar went deep in the fourth inning. Kordonowy put one out in the first inning. Kassidy Cooley hit a homer in Carson’s four-run seventh.

Luschar went 4-for-5 while VonDuering, Kedre Luschar, and Kordonowy all each had two hits.

In the opener, Kordonowy singled home a run as Carson took a 2-0 lead in the first. CHS led 3-0 but Reed came back to tie the game 3-3 in the third.

Carson responded in the fourth when Kedra Luschar hit a three-run triple to give CHS a 6-3 lead. Jailene Salciedo pitched a complete game for the win, striking out seven and walking one over seven innings.

Kailee Luschar went 2-for-2 for CHS.

DAYTON 15, TRUCKEE O

The Dust Devils rolled to another win over Truckee on Saturday. Marissa Hein and Aleea McGill-Howe each had one hit and three runs, Tamia Powell had two hits, three runs and three RBI and Gabrielle Dickenson added a hit for Dayton. Caleigh Onstott allowed one hit over three innings for the win.

TRACK

Ben Granados and Hunter Rauh were among those who had impressive efforts for Carson at the Douglas meet. Granados won the 200 in an impressive time of 23.27 and also won the long jump with an impressive leap of 21 feet, four inches.

Rauh and Granados went 1-2 in the 400 as Rauh won in 53.99 and Granados was second in 54.14. Granados was also fourth in the 100 in 11.49. Zach Sever and Ethan Byasse also had impressive efforts for CHS as Sever won the 800 in 2:07.94 and Byasse won the 1600 in 4:45.33.

Also for Carson’s boys, Jakob Heller took second in the 300 hurdles in 44.75 and won the triple jump at 40-7, the 4x400 relay team of Rauh, Byasse, Sever and Jacob Crossman was second in 3:44.17 and Kai Miller took third in the pole vault at 10-6.

For Carson’s girls, Abby Pradere had an impressive early season time in winning the 1600 in 5:16.94. Ashley Britt won the 100 hurdles in 18.21. Erica Basa, Katherine Oppedahl, Taryn Encinas and Britt were second in the 4x400 relay in 4:22.55.

Merce Tarrayo was a double winner for Carson, winning the shot put at 33-4 1/2 and the discus at 100-01. Basa also placed second in the long jump at 15-7 and second in the triple jump at 31-11.
