NDOT plans pedestrian safety projects in Carson City, Gardnerville, Dayton

On May 6, the Nevada Department of Transportation will launch multiple projects to install pedestrian traffic safety improvements in Carson City, Dayton and Gardnerville.

Washoe Tribe communities in Carson City and Gardnerville

Intermittent lane, roadway shoulder and sidewalk closures will take place through June, primarily during daytime hours of 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, as pedestrian safety and traffic calming improvements are installed on roadways in Washoe Tribe communities in Carson City and Gardnerville.

Electronic flashing pedestrian crossing beacons, known as rapid rectangular flashing beacons, crosswalk lighting and enhanced curb ramps will be installed at the following locations to increase pedestrian accessibility and visibility:

South Curry Street and Shoshone Street, Carson Colony

Clear Creak Avenue and Dat So La Lee Way, Stewart community

Wat’Shemu Drive and Pba’ul Street, Dresslerville community

Health Center crosswalk at Wat’Shemu, Dresslerville community

Recreation Center crosswalk at Wat’Shemu Drive, Dresslerville community

Roadway striping, sidewalk and crosswalk accessibility will be enhanced at the following locations:

Moses Street, Carson community

South Curry Street at Wialaki Street, Paiute Street, Shoshone Street, Oneida Street and Washoe Street, Carson Colony

Center Drive at Gibson Avenue and at Clear Creek Avenue, Stewart community

Wat’Shemu Drive at Pba’ul Street, Dresslerville community

Health Center crosswalk at Wat’Shemu Drive, Dresslerville community

Radar speed signs, which utilize radar to electronically display the travel speed of approaching vehicles within a standard speed limit sign, will be installed to help reduce speeding at the following locations:

Center Drive at Clear Creek Avenue and Arthur Drive, Stewart community

Clear Creek Avenue at Silver Sage Drive and Wa-Pai-Shone Avenue, Stewart community

Wat’shemu Drive and Pba’ul Street, Dresslerville community

Memdawee Run at Dala Ak Way, Dresslerville community

A traffic speed table – essentially a flatter, wider speed bump – will also be installed at Clear Creak Avenue and Dat So La Lee Way. Overhead street lighting will also be installed in certain pedestrian crossing areas for enhanced visibility.

South Stewart Street in Carson City

Through June, intermittent lane and sidewalk closures will take place as pedestrian safety improvements are installed on South Stewart Street in areas between Little Lane and South Carson Street in Carson City. The lane and sidewalk closures will take place Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to as late as 7 p.m., with the majority of lane reductions ending as early as 3:30 p.m. Access to the Carson Mall Shopping Center and nearby state buildings will remain available. Pedestrian crosswalk access across Stewart Street will be available, but pedestrians will be detoured to neighboring crosswalks during active construction.

South Stewart Street at Little Lane

The sidewalk currently located on the north side of the intersection will be moved to the southern side of the intersection.

Electronic flashing pedestrian crossing beacons will be installed on South Stewart Street at Little Lane, allowing pedestrians to activate the signs to help stop traffic as they cross.

Overhead LED street lighting and sidewalk ramps will be installed in certain pedestrian crossing areas for enhanced accessibility and visibility.

South Stewart Street near Wright Way

A new crosswalk and electronic flashing pedestrian crossing beacons will be installed on South Stewart Street mid-block between Little Lane and Wright Way, allowing pedestrians to activate the signs to help stop traffic as they cross.

Concrete pedestrian refuges will be constructed in the middle of the roadway to serve as an additional safety refuge for crossing pedestrians.

Overhead LED street lighting and sidewalk ramps will be installed in certain pedestrian crossing areas for enhanced accessibility and visibility.

NDOT will also resurface South Stewart Street between Little Lane and South Carson Street as a partnered continuation of a Carson City project to repave other sections of South Stewart Street.

U.S. 50 in eastern Carson City and Dayton

Intermittent daytime shoulder and sidewalk closures will take place on U.S. 50 in eastern Carson City and Dayton through June as pedestrian crossing safety improvements are installed. All highway lanes will remain open through most of construction, with only brief lane closures taking place during a few days and nights of localized roadway resurfacing and restriping.

The following pedestrian safety improvements will be installed on U.S. 50 at Silver State Street in eastern Carson City and U.S. 50 at East Pike Street in Dayton:

Sidewalks will be improved for safer and easier pedestrian travel.

Overhead street lighting will be installed in certain pedestrian crossing areas for enhanced visibility.

NDOT dedicates approximately $10 million in state highway funds to pedestrian safety improvements every year. Additionally, NDOT dedicates approximately $21 million annually in federal highway safety funds to roadway safety projects and programs.
