More than a 100 people gathered outside the Nevada legislative building for a candlelight vigil to remember the legacy of former Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson.
The North Las Vegas Democrat died over the weekend in Carson City at the age of 51 while receiving emergency care.
Candles dotted the crowd as elected officials recalled their memories of Thompson and described him as a warm and welcoming man.
Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson told the crowd that he does not “know a single person who ever met Tyrone and didn’t walk away feeling special.”
The Democrat also spent almost two decades volunteering as a court-appointed special advocate for abused and neglected children in the foster care system
Thompson joined the Assembly in 2013 and he later served as chair of the education committee.
