The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company is presenting Gershwin’s Tony-winning, Broadway hit, “Crazy for You,” at the Carson City Community Center on the weekends of May 10-12 and 17-19.
Based on “Girl Crazy,” a 1930s Gershwin musical, “Crazy for You” hit the Broadway stage completely revised with a new script, added material from other Gershwin shows, even some dynamite underscoring from Gershwin’s incredible “Concerto in F.”
And it was a hit. Reviewer Frank Rich from The New York Times wrote, “When future historians try to find the exact moment at which Broadway finally rose up to grab the musical back from the British, they just may conclude that the revolution began last night. The shot was fired at the Shubert Theater, where a riotously entertaining show called ‘Crazy for You’ uncorked the American musical’s classic blend of music, laughter, dancing, sentiment and showmanship with a freshness and confidence rarely seen during the ‘Cats’ decade ... ‘Crazy for You’ scrapes away decades of cabaret and jazz and variety-show interpretations to reclaim the Gershwins’ standards, in all their glorious youth, for the dynamism of the stage.”
The show played for years on Broadway, London and Canada, capturing top honors wherever it went. In the United States, it claimed the 1992 Tony for Best Musical and the 1992 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. In London, it captured the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical, and in Toronto it won the Dora Award for Best Musical.
The story centers around Bobby, a young banker who dreams of being on stage. When sent to desolate Deadrock, Nev., to foreclose on a theater, he falls in love with Polly, the daughter of the theater owner, and decides to help the theater make its payments by putting on a show. When Polly learns Bobby was sent from New York to close on the theater, though, she doesn’t believe he wants to save the theater and rejects him. To win her back, he disguises himself as a major Broadway producer, Bela Zangler, and calls in his showgirl buddies from Broadway to help create a production. Life gets even more interesting when the real Bela Zangler makes the trip to Deadrock to win the love of Tessie, the dance captain of the showgirls.
Animating this zany plot is the impeccable music of George Gershwin, including “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Slap That Bass,” “Embraceable You” and more infectious hits, lavishly accompanied by a professional 17-piece orchestra.
