One of Carson Animal Services Initiative’s annual fundraisers is around the corner, just in time to celebrate the two-year anniversary of the group’s spay and neuter program.

Woofs, Wine and Whiskers is being held May 18 from 6-9 p.m. in the Casino Fandango Ballroom.

“It’s a wine tasting event with appetizers and the greatest chocolate desserts,” said Patti Stewart, vice chair, CASI.

The evening also features music by Dougie L & Geno B from the Lost Reverends of the High Sierra, a live auction of a dozen items, including Disneyland tickets, a Carson City uncirculated silver dollar, and a silent auction of more than 35 items, including gift baskets and dog grooming coupons.

There will also be three blackjack tables on the floor where players can earn prizes. The tables are sponsored by Carson Toyota, Pawsitive Image Grooming Salon, and Pinnacle Executive Suites.

The wine for the event is donated by Breakthrough Beverage and Balletto Vineyards.

Tickets are $45 and available online at friendsofcasi.org.

The proceeds go to fund CASI’s Critter Fixer program now in its third year. The program provides financial assistance for low-income pet owners to spay and neuter their cats and dogs.

“Our theory is if you spay and neuter pets there will be less animals coming into the shelter,” said Stewart.

The program is available to pet owners in Carson City, and Lyon and Storey counties. In two years, the program has fielded 659 phone calls and provided 280 vouchers to get an animal spayed or neutered at a participating veterinarian.

CASI, which originated to raise funds for the new animal shelter, is still providing help to the shelter. It recently donated leash leads to walk dogs and is in the process of purchasing three televisions for the facility.

On June 1, CASI and Pets for the Homeless will be holding a spay and neuter, and vaccination clinic for pets of the homeless at Friends in Service Helping at the corner of Carson and Long streets. Last year, the event helped 43 pets.

CASI’s annual Pooch Plunge is set for Sept. 21 at the Carson City Aquatic Facility’s outdoor pool and its Pictures with Santa fundraiser will be held in early December at Benson’s Feed & Tack on Highway 50 East.
