Kanoffs celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

Marjorie Kanoff and Bruce Kanoff of Carson City celebrated 70 years of marriage May 8.

They were married in Reno on May 8, 1949.

Marjorie and Bruce made their home in Sacramento and have three daughters, Julie Kanoff and Jennifer Kanoff Stewart of Sacramento. Daughter Jill Kanoff passed away in May 1985 in San Francisco.

They also have four grandchildren, including Reee Alexander, Michael Stewart, Amy Tanner and Jonathan Harries, and two great-grandsons, Waylon Stewart, 5, and Oliver Tanner, 3.

Bruce worked through the ranks at the City of Sacramento Fire Department from 1952 to 1975, retiring as deputy fire chief. He became fire chief for the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department in 1975 until 1988, during which time the Harvey’s Resort Hotel bombing occurred in Stateline, and he served as a Douglas County commissioner from 1988 to 1990.

Marjorie worked for the local phone company and the State of California Vital Records. She went to serve as a classroom volunteer when her children were in elementary school and was a full-time, loving and caring stay-at-home mom and homemaker. She sewed her daughters’ dresses and made her husband’s uniform shirts that were crisply ironed and made sure dinner was on the table at 6 o’clock. After moving to Nevada, she was a volunteer for Barton Memorial Hospital and then worked for many years performing billing for Dr. Dennis Bowman of Stateline.

Bruce and Marjorie will be enjoying a family dinner and celebration with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren today at their home in Carson City.
