Grasshoppers: Myriads of grasshoppers coming from a northeasterly direction swarmed into Humboldt County. No serious damage resulted from their ravages. Their eggs however were deposited in the soil. Thousands of them are hopping around Grass Valley and the ranchers are alarmed at the prospect of their devastations.

Rare birds: A flock of twenty glossy Ibis have been observed in the vicinity of the State Prison—beautiful and very rare in this vicinity.

Treadway’s Park: The first picnic of the season takes place at this park under the management of Mr. Varney. There will be a large attendance from Virginia City, and those who visit the park will have a better time than if they had gone to Bower’s Mansion.

Hanging at prison: Charley Kaiser (Keyser), Indian, was hanged at the state prison for killing his wife in Gardnerville. He was related to Dat-So-La-Lee, the famous Indian Basket Weaver, and Lottie, the woman he killed was his second consort.

Photo caption: Roberts’ Restoration begins: Volunteers dismantle a lean-to attached to the Thurman Roberts House. Restoration of the exterior of the 107-year old structure-located at 1217 N. Main St. has begun. Volunteers, spearheaded by Nevada Landmarks Society, have until Nevada Day to restore the house, or it will be torn up and carted away.

The Good Templars had a ball at Empire – 60 couples were present.

The restaurant of L. B. Epstein was burglarized. The robbers got away with a lot of pies.

An excited astronomer: George Hawkins has taken great interest in astronomy and is a pupil of Chas. Friend, our local astronomer. Hawkins came rushing in to Friend’s house, waking him up – and told him he had discovered a new comet. Mr. Friend rose in his night gown and rushing to the observatory fastened his eye to the tube. He found that it was trained on the new electric light recently placed at the Capitol. The man who put up the light neglected to communicate with the observatory. Friend caught a severe cold, and his language is hardly fit for a family paper.

Millennium Scholarship program: Gov. Kenny Guinn and his legal adviser rolled out a new version of how to spend the tobacco settlement money. Half of the $48 million a year funding will go into the Millennium Scholarship program. The other half would be split up between a healthcare plan for seniors, prescription drug subsidies for seniors, and anti-tobacco and stop smoking programs. Negotiations are in progress between the Assembly and Guinn.

Goat Nuisance: There was freedom in the Plaza with a nanny goat and her kid greedily gnawing the bark off one of the cottonwoods. She scampered off and went at another one and ruined a dozen trees. Doc Sharp shows that several valuable fruit trees have been destroyed by goats. Their owners should be held responsible for the damages.

Emma Nevada: The London papers are noticing favorably the achievements of Mademoiselle Nevada, a new American Star from the West, in a Vienna salon. Mademoiselle Nevada is no other than Miss Emma Wixom, daughter of Dr. W. W. Wixom of Austin, Nevada.
