Should no one he can support step up to seek the seat from Ward 4 in 2020, however, Barrette would reconsider his decision to forego another attempt at serving on the board from Ward 4. He said, however, that he’s sure there are ample candidates in his ward. He urged them to run for his post. He said the “right Republican, Democrat or non-partisan should step forward soon.”

“This has been a wonderful chance to serve the citizens of Carson City,” Barrette said, “but it is time to pass this role on to a younger representative to help forge the type of sustainable community we all seek for the next decade and beyond.”

Barrette, 77, said his intention is to return to writing immediately. He is president of JB WebWords, LLC, a company he and his wife formed years ago. It is a firm that has remained in moth balls until now.

Barrette said he will complete his term until January 2021, but will return to what he called his day job by writing regularly. Other board members have day jobs, but he left his writing post in the news business in 2016 to run for his seat from Ward 4. He hasn’t written for regular publication since.

“My thanks to the people of Carson City for affording me this opportunity in public life,” he said. It was an honor to hold office, he added, but said he intends to return to the best and “highest office in the United States – Carson City citizen.”
