Carson City prison inmate faces new murder charge in stabbing

Robert Rowland, 61, has been charged with stabbing a fellow inmate to death.

Rowland, who is serving life in prison for murder, faces a new charge of murder with use of a deadly weapon along with battery by a prisoner with use of a deadly weapon and assault on an officer with use of a deadly weapon.

He is specifically charged with stabbing Thayer Burton, 29, during an incident May 15, 2018. He was transferred from the Northern Nevada Correctional Center to the Carson City Jail on Oct. 30 for proceedings on those charges. He is being held without bail.

Rowland has been in prison since 2000 serving four life sentences after being convicted in Carson District Court on one count of 1st degree murder and three counts as an habitual criminal.

He was also convicted more recently of being an inmate in possession and sentenced to an additional 2-6 years in prison.

Burton was also serving life for first degree murder and use of a deadly weapon as well as conspiracy to commit a violent crime, robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. He was convicted in April 2008 in Clark County District Court.
