Nevada U.S. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen have announced a $3.5 million education grant to help low income students.

The funding to the Nevada Department of Education comes under the GEAR UP program and will finance educational services and scholarships for those students in high-poverty schools.

“Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and this funding provides low income students across Nevada with the tools and resources they need to thrive academically,” the two Democrats said in a joint statement.

GEAR UP provides six year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at middle and high schools that have a high percentage of students in poverty. Grantees receive services from seventh grade through high school, followed by scholarships for students as they head to college.
