Interstate 580 was shut down at the north end of Carson City on Wednesday morning because a hit and run driver led police and the Nevada Highway Patrol on a high-speed chase from south Reno.

The driver of a vehicle suspected of at least eight hit and run collisions in south Reno was arrested after the vehicle was finally stopped. His female passenger was detained briefly but then released.

Trooper Hannah DeGoey said the driver refused to stop for authorities and, instead, drove south at highway speeds through Washoe Valley.

The vehicle was finally stopped by a pair of spike strips near the College Parkway exit in Carson City.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said the driver refused all efforts to get him to cooperate and get out of the vehicle until they sent a K-9 in. The driver was taken to Carson Tahoe hospital for evaluation and treatment for a bite wound he suffered from the police dog.

His name and condition were not yet available.

The freeway was reopened to traffic by 11 a.m.

DeGoey said NHP investigators weren’t sure whether he would be jailed in Carson City or Washoe County but Furlong indicated it would probably be Washoe since, he said, all of the crimes occurred in Washoe County.
