The battle for first place in the 3A East did not disappoint.
After both Fallon and Spring Creek’s girls soccer teams ended in a shutout tie in the last meeting, the Spartans escaped Saturday’s first-place battle with a 1-0 win in Spring Creek.
“We went back and forth. We both had scoring opportunities but could not capitalize,” Fallon coach Manny Lopez said. “Our defense played really well as was always the case.”
The first half was a shutout on both sides, but Spring Creek took advantage of a Fallon miscue midway in the second half. Lopez said Lilly Howard was trying to dribble out of the Fallon goal and felt fouled but nothing was called. Spring Creek stole the possession back and scored the game’s only goal.
“The opposing player took advantage of the situation and shot on goal and scored,” Lopez said. “The entire game was back and forth and had it been for that one moment, I feel like the game would have gone into overtime and possibly penalty kicks.”
Steve Ranson / LVN Fallon’s Bryan Mendoza (13) attempts to control the ball away from Dayton’s Lucas Grasso.
Nevertheless, Lopez was pleased with his team’s season. Fallon lost only twice – to Spring Creek.
“I am very proud of our girls,” he said. “They worked hard all season and never gave up against any team we faced. We have a great group of girls coming back and we are excited for this coming fall season.”
Similar to the girls game, the Fallon boys team’s matchup with Dayton on Friday didn’t see any goals scored in the first half. The Greenwave and Dust Devils, though, each scored twice in the second half, ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
Senior Cole Hamlin and junior Caleb Proffen each scored unassisted.
