Spring is definitely in the air with the opening of the first Green Goddess Farmers Market from 3-8 p.m. on Saturday.
The market, which will be held the first Saturday of the month through September at the Oats Park Arts Center and Lariat Courtyard, combines artwork with produce grown by local farmers.
“We’ll be featuring local producers, arts and crafts,” said Valerie Serpa, executive director of Churchill Arts Council.
The market begins with a session featuring a local food producer.
“We’re doing a Meet Your Farmer interview from 3-4 p.m.,” Serpa said.
During the presentation, she said a specialty cocktail using local ingredients will be available from the Art Bar as will other beverages.
During the farmers market, Serpa said food vendors such as Five Star India Cuisine Food Truck, Wild West Burgers and Telegraph Coffee & Tap will set up on the grass in front of the center. She added a number of food producers from the area will also display their vegetables and fruits.
“The arts center at Oats Parks is the ideal place,” Serpa said of the venue. “We would like to do this for a long time.”
From 4-7 p.m., Serpa said the ChArts Store, which has local artwork and books for purchase, and the two galleries will open to the public for the first time in more than a year. The E. L. Wiegand Gallery is featuring 3X: Painting and Sculpture by Michael Sarich, and the Kirk Robertson Gallery is presenting the Lahontan Valley Fine Arts Invitational.
Sarich is an associated professor of at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has exhibited his works in many national and international exhibitions. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking at Northern Illinois University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma. His focus was on drawing, painting and sculpture. Sarich also studied at the College of Salzburg (Austria).
According to the University of Nevada, Reno website, {his work} “is filled with narrative icons and metaphorical imagery of a highly personal, yet universal nature.”
He studied printmaking and drawing at the College of Salzburg in Austria, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking at Northern Illinois University and a Master of Fine Arts in drawing, painting and sculpture at the University of Oklahoma. He was also a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Award in 2007.
The Lahontan Valley Fine Arts Invitational features the work of local artists and photographers.
