Lawmakers have introduced a resolution that would remove language allowing slavery or indentured servitude from the Nevada Constitution.
The archaic language prohibits slavery in the state except as punishment for a crime.
Assembly Joint Resolution 10 removes that exemption, making it clear that no slavery or indentured servitude can be allowed in Nevada.
AJR10 was passed unanimously by the Assembly and was heard in the Senate Legislative Operations and Elections Committee this past week.
Once passed, the resolution will have to be approved second time in the same form by the 2023 Legislature, then put to a vote of the people in 2024.
