Rep. Mark Amodei toured the Philadelphia mint this week to view the minting of the 2021 Morgan silver dollars honoring the Carson City Mint.
“From 1870-1893, gold and silver coins with the ‘CC’ mark were minted at our very own Carson City Mint,” he said.
Today, that building is home to the Nevada State Museum and historic silver dollars bearing the Carson mint mark are among the most sought after by coin collectors.
“Having been born and raised in Carson City, I am glad this crucial chapter of Nevada’s early history is being honored,” he said.
Also this year, the federal mint is producing dollars with the “O” mint mark honoring the New Orleans mint.
He said during his visit, he got the chance to meet with the designers, engraver and production staff at the mint. He pointed out that the mint is one of the few federal operations capable of actually putting money back into the General Fund. Anything the mint produces that sells for more than it cost and exceeds the mint’s operating costs is returned to the treasury. He said mint officials project that these coins will generate some $30 million in 2021 alone.
