Sisolak names Cancela chief of staff

Gov. Steve Sisolak on Monday announced that former state Sen. Yvanna Cancela will be his new chief of staff.
She assumes the position Sept. 1 but current chief of staff Michelle White will remain with the governor’s office to help with the transition.
Sisolak said Cancela brings, “a unique understanding of state government, policy experience and the ability to build broad coalitions.”
Cancela returns to Nevada after serving as principal deputy director of intergovernmental affairs at the federal Department of Health and Human Services. Before that she represented Senate District 10 in Southern Nevada in the Nevada Senate from 2017 through 2020. Before that she was political director for the Culinary Union representing hospital workers in the state.
Cancela was born and raised in Miami. She has a degree in communications from Northwestern University and a law degree from UNLV’s Boyd School of Law.
