Gov. Steve Sisolak has named Shellie Hughes as the next director of the Taxation Department.
She replaces Melanie Young, who will transfer to the Finance Office as budget administrator.
Hughes has been with the department since 2016 and is currently chief deputy executive director in the department. She has more than 15 years experience in state and local tax law including six years as chief legal adviser to the California Board of Equalization and three years as tax counsel for the board’s appeals division.
Sisolak said she should be a perfect fit to lead taxation.
He thanked Young for her dedication and service in making the department more efficient. She was appointed director in January 2019. He said she was critical in bringing oversight to the state’s recreational pot industry.
The changes take place Aug. 23.
