Carole Vilardo, the longtime head of the Nevada Taxpayers Association, died Monday.
She was 80.
Vilardo joined the NTA in 1986 and was named president of the NTA in 1989. Through her 30 years until retirement in 2016, Vilardo was respected as one of the state’s leading experts on tax policy and Nevada tax law.
She served on numerous state committees studying issues including water funding, education, debt management, transportation, K-12 priorities and funding and on two legislative interim committees studying Nevada’s tax system.
“Her commitment to the NTA extended into retirement with emeritus status on the board of directors,” said NTA Board Chairman Tom Sheets.
“She was a careful, creative and critical thinker who read broadly and thought deeply,” said NTA President Cindy Creighton. “She leaves behind a legacy that will long serve as a benchmark for all Nevadans.”
During her tenure, Vilardo also received numerous awards and honors including serving two terms as chair of the National Taxpayers Conference.
