Steven Bryan, 52, a member of the Washoe Tribe’s Carson Colony, was sentenced to 70 months in prison Thursday for killing his son on tribal land last December.
He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter after a seven-day jury trial before U.S. District Judge Miranda Du in Reno.
He and his son had been arguing over money when the shooting occurred. The victim was shot in the head with an AR-15 style rifle.
In addition to the prison term, Bryan was sentenced to three years of supervised release.
Felonies that occur on tribal reservation property are handled in federal rather than state court.
