Santa will need to be prepared for almost every type of weather on his trip … and that is just in the Sierra.
If Santa is prepared, you probably should be too. Christmas Eve travelers should be prepared for a wintery mix on their commutes. Travel for today will be slow with chains required over the mountain passes.
Valley commuters are seeing cold rain which is causing icy roads in some places. Sidewalks to are icy, so be careful.
The storm has dropped more than 1 inch of rain since it started at the Carson City Airport. The rain is supposed to lighten up this afternoon as the winds pick up. The wind advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. through 7 a.m. Christmas morning.
Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected. Wind prone locations could see gusts over 50 mph.
The rain turned wind will then turn to snow. Carson City is expected to see between 4-6 inches of snow by 10 p.m. Saturday.
The Weather Services storm advisory from late Thursday night says, “Snow levels will plummet to all valley floors by Saturday morning. Several inches of accumulating snowfall is looking increasingly likely beginning Christmas morning. Expected travel impacts and snow covered roads across all elevations. Up to an inch of snowfall possible across western Nevada Basin and Range communities.”
A Thursday morning post says, “The heaviest "push" into western Nevada looks to be during the evening hours tomorrow - so we may not wake up to snow but be patient.”
