The countdown is on for Churchill County residents to turn the last page on the calendar in a few days and ring in 2022.
In what has become an anticipated tradition is the fireworks show at the Churchill County Fairgrounds on New Year’s Eve followed by a fun run on Saturday for residents to rattle out the cobwebs.
The annual fireworks sponsored by the city of Fallon begins at 6:05 p.m. on Friday night. According to Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department, the gates to the grandstand open at 5:30 p.m. for those who want to breathe the fresh, crisp air. Because of the construction of the new community center at the main fairgrounds’ parking lot, the bonfire will not be held.
During the fireworks and for those bundled up snuggly in their vehicles, KKTU Radio (99.5 FM) will play Christmas music while the sky lights up with festive colors.
But for residents who see everything in black and white, the Churchill County Museum has an event for you on New Year’s Eve to ring out 2021.
The museum has a Black and White Masquerade fundraiser. Each ticket includes a gourmet meal catered by Maine Street Café with a free drink, dancing and a champagne toast at midnight. Tickets are $65 each or $480 for a table of eight.
In addition, there will be silent auction items including a night at the Peppermill with a $100 gift certificate, a slot machine and numerous other themed gift baskets.
For information on the Black and White Masquerade, call the museum at 775-423-3677.
Now for the cobwebs and that comatose feeling on New Year’s Day. It’s a good day to run or walk, and nothing could be better than to enter the Parks & Recreation Department’s New Year’s Day 5k run, walk or crawl.
Prepare for a chilly day with highs predicted in the low 30s with morning lows in the teens.
The run divisions include male and female in 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and older. There’s online pre-registration and registration on the day of the race. Check in next to Fallon City Hall is from 9-9:50 a.m. with the race/walk beginning at 10 a.m.
Preregistration fees are $20 but $30 on the day of the race. For a family of four, the pre-registration cost is $75 and $100 on the actual day.
For those preferring indoor activities before New Year’s Day, a Winter Fest Dance is from 3-6 p.m. on Dec. 29 at the William N. Pennington Life Center. On Thursday is a Special Story Time, Countdown to Noon, which begins at 11 a.m. at the Churchill County Library and a Holiday Movie Showing, also on the same day at 6 p.m. The movie Wind River will play at the Fallon Theatres.
