With the winter season all but gone, fall sports are starting to ramp up this month.
Workouts have begun for the Greenwave as the first official day of the fall season, which was moved because of the pandemic, is Feb. 13 for football and Feb. 20 for the cross country, tennis, girls golf, soccer and volleyball. Games begin March 5, and the season is scheduled to end on April 10 with regional postseason. There will be no state playoffs.
Although football practices can begin in less than two weeks, the sport is still on the state’s “no play” list from Directive 033 announced in October. The statewide pause is scheduled to end this month with the hope that football, deemed a high-risk sport because of the contact, will be allowed.
Pandemic procedures will be in place for all workouts, which are not mandatory. Student-athletes must be registered to compete.
Preseason football workouts run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m. Players are asked to dress warm and bring a mask, cleats and water.
Volleyball workouts are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. in the new gym.
Boys and girls cross country workouts run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 4-5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Head coach David Ernst said runners need to meet outside the gym by the tennis courts.
Boys soccer workouts are in the new gym on Mondays and Thursdays from 7-8:30 p.m. Players need to bring indoor shoes or indoor soccer shows, mask, shin guards and water. Girls soccer workouts are being conducted inside the new gym three times per week.
Boys and girls tennis workouts are from after school at 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Girls golf workout information was not available.
For Oasis Academy, volleyball preseason workouts are Mondays and Thursdays at the city-county gym. Cross country workouts will start on Friday.
