A small windfall. Two lads at the Orphan’s Home, Frederick and Alexander Hook, have fallen heirs to a small bit of property, amounting to about $500. They inherit this from their father who died recently. Mr. George B. Webb, Superintendent of the Home, has been appointed guardian of these small capitalists and their wee dab of a fortune.

About Tonapah (sic). H.A Cohen, agent for Captain DeLamar, returned form Tonapah Thursday. He brought with him a lot of samples. He says that he has never before seen such a fine prospect and that if the ore goes down and carries anything like the surface values Tonapah will be a great camp.

Leap Year Basket Party. — We acknowledge a complimentary ticket of admission to a “Leap Year Basket Party” which is to be given at the Court House, Genoa, on Friday to be given for the benefit of Mr. George W. Clifton, the blind violinist, and that the price of the tickets, including supper, is two dollars. We are much tempted to go. By the way, what is a “basket party?”

The Carson Vaudeville Club which has been organized in this city by J.R. Pavilla, will render its initial performance at the Opera House Friday. The members who participate are ladies and gentlemen of acknowledged ability in Carson, and under the experienced professional management of Mr. Pavilla.

According to advices received from Reno four sheep headers are missing and fear is entertained for them. The four men left their camp in Northern Washoe County on January 19th and have never been heard from since that time. A posse has been organized to institute a search for the missing sheep men.

From the Los Angeles Herald: “While surgeons fought to save him, Frank Lee, aged 14, the son of Mrs. Dora Lee, was a the point of death today at the Methodist Hospital, as the result of a severe beating, it was said as administered several days ago by a teacher at the Las Vegas, Nev., grammar school. Surgeons stated he will be paralyzed for life.

Reno is having a meat fight. One local butcher, because he cut prices, has been cut off the list by the meat trust, and is threatened with extermination by that outfit. He is giving them a bully good shake-up and squatting some of the inside doings of the Nevada trust. Hope the fever hits this section.

The Los Angeles Herald reports: “Following two profound periods of depression during the night and early morning, 10-year-old Frank Lee, suffering from seropurulente meningitis, alleged to have been from a whipping receive at a Las Vegas grammar school, was reported much worse today.”
Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
