Assemblyman Andy Matthews of Las Vegas has announced he will run for state controller.
Matthews, a Republican, is the former president of the Nevada Policy Research Institute, a conservative political group based in the south. He is in his first term as an Assemblyman representing District 37.
“I’m proud of my record fighting for government transparency, fiscal responsibility and pro-growth policies that are essential to a robust and thriving economy,” he said.
Matthews said his candidacy is endorsed by several prominent Republican political figures including former Gov. Bob List and former Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt-Bono and former Attorney General Adam Laxalt as well as fellow Assembly members Jill Dickman of Sparks, Carson City’s P.K. O’Neill and Elko’s John Ellison.
The office is currently held by Democrat Catherine Byrne a Certified Public Accountant who is in her first term. In 2018, she defeated Republican incumbent Ron Knecht who was her boss in the controller’s office at the time.
Byrne has not yet announced her intentions but is expected to seek a second term.
