The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch throughout the greater Reno, Carson City, and Minden area from Saturday afternoon to Monday evening.
Residents participating in outdoor events should be aware that high temperatures will increase potential for heat related illnesses, according to the NWS.
The alert included instructions for city residents to drink plenty of fluids, maintain access to air conditioning, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
The NWS also predicts extreme heat in the greater Lake Tahoe area this weekend.
“If you plan on venturing into the Sierra this weekend to escape the lower elevation heat, note that conditions will still feel quite hot for the afternoon hours,” said an NWS Special Weather Statement issued directly after the excessive heat watch. “Also, Lake Tahoe water temperatures are in the upper 60s, so cold water shock is still possible, which can greatly increase the chances for inhaling water and drowning. Personal flotation devices are recommended at all times.”
Temperatures may reach up to 100-108 degrees in valleys, with mid 80s and 90s throughout higher elevation areas. Carson City may see highs over 100 degrees, and lows in the 60s.
“It’s going to be hot this week, and it’s going to be really hot this weekend,” an NWS forecaster in Reno said.
For residents who can’t avoid going out during the hottest mid-day hours, he recommended wearing loose clothing, light colors, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen.
Lots of people forget that drinking fluids includes more than water; electrolyte-packed sports drinks can go a long way in keeping folks hydrated, according to the NWS.One Carson City resident called the Appeal to add that cracking your car windows in the heat can prevent vehicle damage. While out shopping, she came back to her car and found the back windshield shattered. When the Sheriff's Department arrived to assess the damage, they said it was likely heat-caused.
