Krysta Palmer and her diving partner Alison Gibson came into the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics with the toughest degree of difficulty of any of the eight teams competing for a medal Saturday night local time.
A Sunday afternoon in Tokyo, Palmer and Gibson finished the Olympic synchronized final in eighth place, missing medal contention.
The duo scored 263.49 points total through five dives while the Chinese pairing of Shi Tingmao and Wang Han took gold with 326.4 points.
Through the first two rounds, Palmer and Gibson were tied for first place with 99.6 points.
On their opening dive, the duo attempted a dive of a 2.0 degree of difficulty, scoring 49.2 points.
The second dive was the best based on difficulty for the USA pairing, posting a 50.4.
In the third and fourth dives, Palmer and Gibson rotated slightly out of synch, knocking down their scores.
Though the duo won’t see a medal in synchronized diving, Palmer will be back in action in the 3-meter individual springboard competition, starting Thursday at 11 p.m. PST.
The individual competition spans three days with the semifinals taking place Friday at 11 p.m. before the finals Saturday evening at 11 p.m. PST.
