Notice of Intended Disposition
Providing notice in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), 43 CFR 10.6 (c), of the intent to transfer custody of Native American human remains in the control of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, Interior Region 10: California Great Basin (Reclamation), Sacramento, California. On March 22, 2021, Reclamation was notified that possible human remains were found by an archaeological crew surveying potential grazing allotments on Reclamation land near Fallon, NV. The remains were located in the aboriginal lands of the Northern Paiute and the Western Shoshone Indians. On March 31, 2021, Reclamation met with the Fallon Paiute Shoshone tribe to collect and secure the remains until the NAGPRA process is completed and the remains are repatriated. A detailed assessment of the human remains was made by a Reclamation physical anthropologist, who determined that, pursuant to 43 CFR 10.2 (d)(1), the human remains represent a minimum of one unknown adult individual of Native American ancestry. Reclamation officials have determined that, pursuant to 43 CFR 10.6 (a), the geographical and historical evidence for the determination of custody demonstrates that the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe is aboriginal to the land from which the human remains were removed. As such, the human remains will be turned over to the custody of the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe if no other federally recognized Indian Tribe(s) makes a claim for their ownership or control. Representatives of any other federally recognized Indian Tribe that wish to claim ownership or control of the human remains should contact Reclamation Regional NAGPRA Coordinator Melanie Ryan by telephone: 916-978-5526; email: emryan@ usbr.gov; or mail: 2800 Cottage Way CGB- 153, Sacramento, CA 95825 before September 3, 2021. Disposition of the Native American human remains to the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe will proceed if no additional claimants come forward before this date. Reclamation is responsible for notifying the Fallon Paiute- Shoshone Tribe about this published notice.
