LAS VEGAS — A Nevada Highway Patrol trooper died Thursday, two days after being critically injured when struck on a Las Vegas freeway by a stolen vehicle driven by an armed carjacking suspect.
Trooper Micah May, 46, "passed away while bravely protecting his community," Gov. Steve Sisolak said on Twitter. "His heroic actions and contributions to the State of Nevada will never be forgotten."
The stolen car driven by the suspect trying to elude Las Vegas police and state troopers struck May on Tuesday as May deployed a tire-deflating device on Interstate 15.
The incident began with a pursuit on surface streets and ended when the suspect was fatally shot by troopers after his vehicle stopped on the freeway.
During his 13 years with the Highway Patrol, May received numerous awards for apprehending impaired drivers, the state agency state in a statement. "This is a time of enormous grief for our agency, his family, and our communities."
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the shooting of the suspect, who was identified Thursday by the Clark County coroner's office as Douglas Claiborne, 60.
May is survived by his wife and two children.
