A Dayton man apparently committed suicide in a parking lot Thursday morning, according to a Lyon County Sheriff’s Office news release.
At 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Maverik in Dayton for shots fired, according to the release. Upon arriving, deputies discovered the victim, 76-year-old Dayton resident Johnny Barnett, deceased.
The incident occurred in a dirt lot near Maverik. Witnesses, from the store, stated the man had shot himself. Lifesaving efforts were attempted.
A handgun was found at the scene and it appears Barnett shot himself, the release said. No other people were injured. Barnett’s family was notified a short time later.
At this time, this case is under investigation, and there is no danger to the public.
