Every year in mid-June, a group of about 25 cyclists and six crew members begin a trip of a lifetime, setting out from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., where their ride will end.

North Route riders left San Francisco on June 13 and after making some stops in California before cresting the Sierra Nevada, they spent Friday night in Carson City and arrived Saturday in Fallon. They resumed their journey across Nevada on U.S. Highway 50 on Sunday with stops over the next few days in Austin, Eureka, Ely and then Baker, the gateway to Great Basin National Park, before riding into Utah.

Another team travels the northern tier of the U.S., while the third team crosses the southern section. When all teams arrive in Washington, D.C., the cyclists will have ridden through 32 states and crossed 12,000 combined miles.

The riders and their crewmembers belong to Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity with their focus on visiting communities across the United States as part of Journey of Hope, a program of the Ability Experience that raises funds and awareness for people with various disabilities. Their 2020 trip, though, was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Each rider raises money through donations and with their individual efforts, corporate sponsorships and the Journey of Hope, the teams representing the three different routes will raise more than a half-million dollars for their cause.
