Three additional people have been arrested in connection with an escape from the Carson City Detention Facility and three more people are being sought, according to a news release from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
At least nine people have now been implicated in Saturday’s escape of Matthew Marizza, 27, and Cody Abernathy, 29. Marizza was recaptured Sunday in Sacramento and Abernathy was apprehended Tuesday in Carson City.
Austin Wayne Rivers, 29, was arrested Monday; he is suspected of supplying the car Marizza and Abernathy used to escape from the jail.
Wednesday, CCSO announced the arrests of Ashley Baldwinson, Dennis Harrison and Mark White for aiding Abernathy by providing him clothing, transportation and a hideout, according to the CCSO release.
Additionally, John Staikoff, Kaylie Attaberry and Lance Stewart “remain persons of interest” in the investigation.
Tuesday at 6:40 p.m., CCSO responded to assist the Carson City Fire Department at 2741 Lovelace Lane regarding an unconscious person. Upon arrival, the deputy recognized the unconscious male as Abernathy, according to the release.
Abernathy was transported to the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released to the custody of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
Carson Sheriff Ken Furlong said authorities believe Rivers, who was released from the jail earlier Saturday, parked his white minivan outside the jail and later told deputies it had been stolen. The vehicle was found abandoned near Hells Bells Road.
Furlong said Marizza and Abernathy also are charged with stealing another vehicle and driving to Sacramento. There, an attempted traffic stop turned into a high-speed chase ending in a crash. Sacramento sheriff’s deputies said two men fled the scene. Furlong said his people were able to advise Sacramento officers where Marizza might be located and he said they found him just an hour later.
Marizza and Abernathy escaped from the backside of the jail, from the area that includes the loading dock used for large delivery trucks. That area also includes an exit from the courthouse.
