The federal Homeland Security Department has decided to again extend the deadline for people to get a Real ID-compliant driver’s license.
The Oct. 1 deadline this year is now pushed back until May 3, 2023.
DMV Director Julie Butler said the extension is a great relief to her department, helping to avoid a potential rush of customers this fall even as the state is recovering from the pandemic.
“This is a great relief for our travel and tourism industries, individual Nevadans and the DMV across the board,” she said.
She advised people needing a Real ID to wait until their next renewal or other in-person visit to DMV. She said people can upgrade their license at the same time they complete any other transaction at the DMV.
Real ID cards are already required at secure federal facilities including military bases and courthouses.
