The Greenwave and Bighorns high school teams finished the first half of the regular season last month with the standings starting to take shape in the team sports.
Fallon’s tennis teams clinched the No. 4 seed and will host the first round of the regional tournament next week. The soccer teams continue to improve with the Lady Wave hosting top-seed Spring Creek on Saturday. And the Bighorns’ volleyball team won its first league game of the year.
The following is a recap of Greenwave and Bighorns action from the last two weeks.
Cross country
In the 5,000-meter trek at the Ponderosa Golf Course in Truckee on Sept. 25, Quentin Dowler finished with a time of 20:23 while Cameron Christy finished in 21:10 and Gerik Wassmith in 23:00. The best time came by Yerington’s Kutoven Stevens, who finished in 16:02. The best finish from a 3A runner was Fernley’s Kael Paz in 18:08.
Savanna Regli paced the Lady Wave with a time of 24:26 and Zoey Brown was close behind, finishing at 24:34. Bishop Manogue’s Amaya Aramini won the race in 19:35 while Lowry’s Jovi Kuskie had the best time of the 3A runners, finishing in 20:01.
Fallon competed the following week in Sparks at the Reed Invitational at Shadow Mountain Park on Friday.
Christy led the boys team with a 22:49 finish in the 5,000-meter course and Wassmuth followed in 23:18. The top time again went to Stevens, who finished in 16:33.
Oasis Academy’s Hunter Arends finished in 25:47.
The best time among 3A runners was Paz in 18:23.
Regli led the girls with a time of 25:47 and Brown followed in 26:19. Kuskie won the meet in 20:44.
Volleyball
Oasis Academy picked up its first win of the season, taking down Pyramid Lake in Fallon.
The Bighorns won 25-18, 25-23 and 25-13 on Wednesday. Oasis Academy faced Sage Ridge on Friday (no score was available) and hosted Sierra Lutheran on Monday.
After suffering a tough five-game loss to Lowry the week before, the Lady Wave couldn’t come back against cross-valley rival Fernley on Wednesday as the Vaqueros won 25-15, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-7. Fallon fell to Dayton in five on Saturday.

Girls golf
Playing with a full team for the first time this season, the Lady Wave golf team placed fourth last Tuesday at the Ponderosa Golf Course, a par-70, nine-hole course in Truckee.
Fallon's Lainee Reid (95) and Hannah Benjamin (115) led the way to the team's overall score of 449. Douglas won the tournament with a 369 followed by Truckee (395) and Lowry (399). The low medalist was Truckee's Ryan Flynn, who carded a 73. Reid (pictured putting), playing in just her second tournament, tied for fifth.
Fallon's Gabby Loop shot a 115 and Rebeca Quesada finished with a 134 in her first tournament of the year.
The day before in Dayton, Reid led the team with a score of 90 followed by Benjamin at 109 and Loop at 111.
Fallon finished the regular season this week at Fernley and South Tahoe. The state tournament is in two weeks in Southern Nevada.
Fallon’s chances of qualifying the entire team are slim but Reid is in solid position to represent the Lady Wave. She has a 92.5-stroke average and sits in third place in the Northern 3A.
Soccer
The Lady Wave soccer team picked up another pair of wins before seeing its streak snap after a 1-1 tie at Dayton on Saturday.
Fallon defeated Lowry, 8-2, on Sept. 23 and Fernley, 3-0, on Thursday for its fourth consecutive win.
The Lady Wave is 0.5 games behind Spring Creek for first place in the 3A East.
The Fallon boys finished 1-1-2 in the last two weeks, recording its first league win on Saturday against Dayton. Fallon tied Manogue, 1-1, on Sept. 18 before falling to Lowry, 6-0, on Sept. 21. Fallon tied Fernley, 1-1, on Thursday and knocked off Dayton, 6-2.

Tennis
Both the Fallon boys and girls tennis teams clinched the No. 4 seed in the Northern 3A and will host the first round of the regional team tournament next week.
The boys team (5-3), which fields one singles player and one doubles team short of a full lineup, won three of its last five contests to end the regular season. The Greenwave beat North Tahoe, 12-6, on Sept. 21 but lost at South Tahoe, 10-8, on Sept. 23. Fallon swept North Valleys, 14-4, and Sparks, 12-3, to end its homestand last week. Fallon, though, lost 15-3 to Bishop Manogue, one of the top teams in the 5A, on Thursday.
The Lady Wave had two forfeits, one going as a loss to Truckee and the other as a win over North Tahoe, before losing to South Tahoe, 14-4, on Sept. 23. Fallon won its last 3A match of the year against North Valleys, 12-6, on Tuesday. Fallon fell to Manogue on Thursday.
The Greenwave boys and girls will host the No. 5 seed (still to be determined at press time) in the team regional tournament with the boys contest next Monday at 3 p.m. and the girls on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex. The boys winner takes on No. 1 seed on Wednesday and the girls winner also faces the No. 1 on Thursday. The league final is next Friday.
The singles and doubles regional tournament is in two weeks.
