Republican State Sen. Ben Kieckhefer of Reno announced Friday that he has resigned from the Nevada Legislature.
Kieckhefer was later appointed to the Nevada Gaming Commission by Gov. Steve Siolak.
"I’d like to thank everyone who has helped and supported me over the past decade, particularly my constituents, who trusted me to represent them in their government. I’m incredibly proud of the work we have done to help move Nevada forward," Kieckhefer said on Twitter.
Kieckhefer first took office in 2011 and his resignation came more than a year before the end of his current four-year term. He's represented parts of south Reno, Carson City and Incline Village for the past decade.
The job of appointing a new District 16 representative in the legislature will fall to the Carson City Board of Supervisors and the Washoe County Commission. The appointment will be necessary and need to be done quickly as the Nevada Legislature is expected to convene a special session in November to tackle redistricting.
