The Nevada Highway Patrol has begun a year-long program to find and prevent impaired driving.
The DUI Saturation Traffic Safety Program is funded by a $100,000 grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety. It began Oct. 1 and will run through Sept. 30, 2022.
A spokesman said the funding will enable NHP to add extra patrols to focus on finding impaired drivers. Trooper Charles Casten said the goal is to increase safety on Nevada roads by increasing not only enforcement but awareness of impaired driving laws and prevent crashes and deaths.
Through September, there have been 289 fatalities on Nevada roadways. That is a 28 percent increase compared to the 226 deaths in the same nine months of 2020.
