Father Hyacithe’s bowling saloon is a very neat and cleverly conducted institution. We dropped in there yesterday. Never an neater bar, never a more cleanly kept place; never a more cheery landlord. Among other attractions is a rife and a target. The rifle shoots bird shot; the charge is a trifle of dynamite contained in a percussion cap. Let the man of leisure proceed to the Father’s bowl at the skittle pins.

High Rental. Lucky Baldwin asks a rental of $700 per month for the Tallac House next season. In consequence of this exorbitant charge the Sharp brothers will not take it. It is stated, that Baldwin will bring J.T. Pantline, formerly landlord of the Ormsby House, from Arizona, and put him in charge of the Tallac.

The race Sunday at the fair grounds between Wing and Stanley is creating a great deal of interest. This race promises to be a closer one than last Sunday. A crowd is expected over from Carson. They will bring coin along with which to back Wing. — Journal

The “Oakies” and the “Arkies” are again on the march in California in numbers greatly in excess of the migrants of a few years ago whose “invasion” and experiences in the state wet of Nevada furnished the inspiration and material for “The Grapes of Wrath.” California state officials are already worrying about what is going to happen when defense spending ends.

Winners have been selected for the 13th annual Nevada Day Historical Essay Contest. Named this year was Tod Cline of Carson City for his essay “My Own Dat-So-La-Lee” the story of his great, great step grandmother, the famed Washoe Indian basket maker.

A local crack rifle shot said this morning that there was at one time 250 men belonging to Comstock military companies practicing target shooting and that they shot away more than a half ton of lead monthly; that the monthly cost of cartridges was probably $1,000. During the eight years that number of men were practicing target shooting fully $100,000 was expended for cartridges.

Archie Pozzi, local Ford dealer, is confined to his home by illness today. His son, Archie Junior, reported for duty at the Pozzi Motor Co. office this morning, but during the forenoon he suffered an attack of illness and was obliged to go home.

Every day we hear complaints of the malicious mischief of a gang of bad boys who roam about the town unchecked by their parents and unterrified by past punishments. Within a week these young bandits being detected in some of their devilment, and being remonstrated with by a lady, bestowed upon their such a tirade of profanity and nastiness as not only shocked but frightened her. A Truant Marshal ought to be appointed to look after these and other bad boys.

After next Monday the steamer Governor Stanford, on Lake Tahoe, will only make weekly trips until the beginning of the tourist season of 1882.

A general manager of the Southern Pacific Company has made a formal announcement that a reward of $250 will be paid for the arrest of each of the robbers who held up the train near Eugene, Oregon. The company is determined to resort to every possible means to bring the men to justice, including bringing in the Pinkertons.

Persons who have been hoping that the skies will clear and fair weather prevail during the parade this week were disappointed over prospects this forenoon, but were again hopeful when the clouds began to break between one and two in the afternoon.

Members of the Capital City Gun Club will shoot today at 1 p.m., according to the club Secretary Charles Poehlman. “If the snow is too deep, of course, we won’t shoot,” he said, “but otherwise expect to be out this afternoon.”

By the time she was 6, Arline Fisher’s father had taken more than 6,000 photos of her. John James Forest Nulty would later add photographs of four U.S. presidents, and nearly 50 years of Nevada and Nevada governors to that collection. He died at the age of 91.
